What is deadmau5 and mau5trap looking for in a track? Is there a specific genre submissions need to be in?

Deadmau5 and mau5trap are looking for an original electronic dance track that’s so good deadmau5 can’t ignore it.

  • Your track should be under ten minutes long
  • It should resonate with mau5trap’s focus on progressive house, techno, and electro house
  • Make sure your track is an MP3
  • All submissions must be 100% original to you
  • Cannot sample other artists or pre-existing works. Cannot use any element of any pre-existing work including any audio file or copyrighted work created or controlled by another artist
  • Tracks containing any component from any pre-existing work will not be considered.

Your track will be evaluated on originality, quality, and fit with the mau5trap label. So take risks, experiment, and learn something about your sound.

What audio format should my track be in?

Please make sure your track is an MP3. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to accept any other track format or convert the audio file for students.

Any advice before I submit my entry?

For inspiration and guidance, we recommend revisiting the following course chapters from deadmau5’s class as they should be useful when producing your submission:

Chapter 2: The deadmau5 Process: Theory - Joel walks through his thought process and techniques to experiment for new music.

Chapter 5: Developing Melodic Structures - Joel walks through how to develop melodic structures and turn them into arrangements.

Chapter 8: Experimenting with Modular Synths - Joel walks through how to experiment with modular synths.

Chapter 10: Shaping Sounds with Effects and Processing - Joel walks through how to shape sounds using various effects and processing techniques.

Chapter 13: Structuring Songs - Joel walks through how to structure songs.

If I help a classmate edit their submission and my classmate becomes a semifinalist, finalist, or grand prize winner, do I win as well?

No. When helping classmates, remember that this is their work and your name won't be attributed to it.
